“What is most special [about this series] is watching the evolution of the country but even more so the town, as well as the family over the generations....[It’s] something that can only be accomplished in a series of novels like this.”

The Kingsland Series By
Three novels, spanning three centuries. One family, their secrets and despairs, lives and loves, successes and failures, over six generations and more than 200 years.
These are the themes of the Kingsland series, brought into the present by Volume 3, the The Heir. Volume 1, This is the House, begins after the Revolution and follows its characters through the War of 1812. The House of Kingsley Merrick, Volume 2, takes the next set of family members through the Clipper Ship Era, Civil War, and the Guilded Age. The Series tracks the shifting goals of the American Dream, looking at how these goals affect the characters whose lives are explored in its volumes.
“I wanted to show readers how history was lived by real people,” says Hill. “I especially I wanted to describe the permutations of the American Dream that have evolved over the living of that history.” The Kingsland Series stops short of predicting how today’s permutation will affect us—the real people—but invites us to consider the options.
